SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - A crowd of protesters estimated by organizers to include more than 1,000 people from various environmental groups has gathered outside the Getty mansion in San Francisco where they're calling on President Obama to reject construction of a pipeline that would transport oil from Canada to the Texas Gulf Coast.
The president is set to attend a fundraiser at the mansion - one of two events he's attending in San Francisco Wednesday night.
The protesters are opposed to the Keystone XL pipeline, a pipeline that if approved, would carry oil extracted from tar sands in Canada more than 1,700 miles to refineries in Texas.
Opponents of the pipeline say it would carry "dirty oil" that contributes to global warming.
But advocates contend that construction of the pipeline would create jobs, and would be more energy efficient than transporting the oil by truck or rail.
