OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - A California prison gang leader has been indicted for murder, conspiracy and racketeering in connection with the Oakland stabbing deaths of a couple.
The bodies of 73-year-old paroled killer Johnny Gilbert Navaerette and 56-year-old Renee Washington were found in a burning apartment in September 2011.
The San Francisco Chronicle says a federal grand jury this month indicted 48-year-old Henry Cervantes for the deaths.
Cervantes is described as a top-ranking member of the Nuestra Familia prison gang.
Federal prosecutors say Nuestra Familia leaders at Pelican Bay State Prison issue kill orders to street gang members.
Cervantes is charged with the stabbing deaths of the couple and enlisting two gang members to destroy evidence at the murder scene the following day.
