LIVERMORE, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say a pilot was killed when a small kit plane crashed in a field near an interstate highway in Northern California.

Alameda County fire Battalion Chief John Walsh tells KTVU-TV that the plane crashed shortly before 5 p.m. Saturday near Livermore just north of Interstate 580.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Allen Kenitzer says the Loehle Mustang had taken off from Livermore Municipal Airport shortly before it crashed for unknown reasons.

Walsh said the one person aboard was declared dead when firefighters reached the scene. The person's identity has not been released.

A small brush fire was burned about 1 ½ acres before firefighters put it out.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash.
