SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - The cities of Atherton, Menlo Park and Palo Alto have lost a bid to block the California high-speed rail line along the peninsula's Caltrain corridor.

A Sacramento County judge's dismissal of the five-year-old lawsuit on Thursday means that the state can send its planned $68 billion high-speed rail network from the San Joaquin Valley and through the Pacheco Pass into San Jose and San Francisco.

The San Jose Mercury News says the peninsula cities and environmentalists argued the route would negatively harm the environment and they sued under the California Environmental Quality Act.

They had proposed a longer alternate route that would take high-speed rail trains on an east San Francisco Bay route through the Altamont Pass.
