MERCED, Calif. (AP) - Sheriff's deputies say one man was killed and two were seriously injured in a fuel tank explosion on a ranch near Merced.
Merced County deputies say the 3:45 p.m. Wednesday explosion occurred on the edge of an orchard near a farm home.
Deputy Delray Shelton tells the Merced Sun-Star it appears the victims may have been hit with pieces of metal shrapnel.
Two of the injured were flown to a hospital in Merced, but condition updates haven't been released.
The names of the victims haven't been released and a cause for the blast has not been located.
Investigators say it is unclear whether the men were ranch hands or from an employment service.
Shelton says the state Division of Occupational Safety and Health will investigate.
