FRESNO, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say at least one person is dead after a small plane crashed in mountains northeast of Fresno.

A Federal Aviation spokesman says a Cessna 421 was flying on an instrument flight plan from Salinas to Omaha, Neb. when it went down late Saturday.

Fresno County sheriff's officials told the Fresno Bee a helicopter crew spotted the wreckage of the plane near Shaver Lake, an alpine lake about 35 miles northeast of Fresno, around 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

Sheriff's Office spokesman Chris Curtice says when crews found the plane it was upside down.

It was not known if there were additional occupants in the plane, but search teams were looking late Saturday to see if anyone had been thrown from the wreckage, or if there were any survivors in the area.

Fresno County authorities did not immediately return a call to The Associated Press seeking more details of the crash.
