ROSEMEAD, Calif. (AP) - Court documents reveal that a Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputy who shot and killed a mentally ill woman won't face criminal charges.

A letter from the district attorney's office obtained by the San Gabriel Valley Tribune (http://bit.ly/VNY3UZ ) says Deputy Brian Vance acted in lawful self-defense when he shot 40-year-old Jazmyne Ha Eng in January 2012.

Vance opened fire on the 93-pound woman after he and three other officers responded to a call from the Asian Pacific Family Center's director.

Prosecutors say deputies arrived to find Eng yelling incoherently, holding a hammer near her head.

Deputies fired a stun gun at Eng, but it didn't stop her advance toward them, so Vance fired at her twice.

Eng's sister Nancy said Monday the shooting never should have happened, but declined further comment.
