LOS ANGELES (AP) - A Southern California elementary school has gotten a surprise visitor - one with claws.

The Los Angeles Times ( ) says a mountain lion found its way onto the campus of Monte Vista Elementary in La Crescenta Wednesday morning - just three days into the new school year.

The cougar was spotted about 6 a.m. by a custodian near a staff parking lot. It apparently jumped a fence into bushes on the other side. The cat was gone by the time sheriff's deputies arrived.

The foothill community near Los Angeles is no stranger to wildlife but teachers and administrators passed out flyers to parents warning them about the sighting.
