ATWATER, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say a motorcyclist in Central California died less than a minute into a police chase after he hit an off-duty bus.
California Highway Patrol Sgt. Gerardo Serrato tells the Merced Sun-Star an Atwater police officer spotted the man doing wheelies on his Harley-Davidson motorcycle on Monday night.
Serrato says the officer tried to make a traffic stop, but the motorcyclist sped off, driving into an intersection and striking the Merced Transit Authority bus as it was making a left turn. The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.
He has not been identified.
The bus driver was alone on the bus and wasn't hurt in the crash.
