SANTA ROSA, Calif. (AP) - Friends and neighbors of a 13-year-old boy who was shot and killed by a Northern California sheriff's deputy while carrying a pellet gun that looked like an assault rifle have marched to remember the teen and protest the shooting.

Hundreds of people turned out Wednesday night in Santa Rosa in support of Andy Lopez, who was fatally shot in the city a day earlier.

The Press Democrat of Santa Rosa reports that marchers chanted, "We need justice," and questioned how the deputy mistook a pellet gun for an assault rifle.

Authorities say one of two deputies who confronted Lopez repeatedly ordered him to drop the weapon and opened fire when Lopez turned toward them with it.

Lopez was pronounced dead at the scene.
