LOS ANGELES (AP) - Los Angeles Port Police officials say a man died while trying to save two people who were swept into sea.
Lt. Michael Capodanno said the 36-year-old man jumped over the breakwater in San Pedro's Cabrillo Beach Saturday to help pull a 49-year-old man and a 14-year-old boy to safety.
A witness told the Los Angeles Times (http://lat.ms/1ceVaoQ ) he was preparing to photograph the sunrise when a man ran up to him screaming that a large wave had knocked people who were fishing on the breakwater into the ocean.
Mike Czako said that as he called 911, the man who had run up to him jumped into the water.
He said rescuers were nearly swept away by another large wave when they responded to the scene. The man and boy survived.
