Man Critical After Being Shot by Richmond Police

RICHMOND, Calif. (AP) - Richmond police say a 30-year-old man is hospitalized in critical condition after being shot in a confrontation with officers.

Lt. Bisa French, a Richmond police spokesman, says the man was shot around 5 p.m. Monday when officers responded to an area near an apartment complex after getting calls about a man with a gun.

About the same time, French says the city's ShotSpotter technology indicated shots had been fired in the area.

In the confrontation with the man, officers fired several shots. French could not say what prompted officers to open fire, or how many times the man had been hit,

A gun was recovered at the scene, but police are not releasing what type of weapon it was.

The name of the man has not been released.

As part of the department's protocol, the shooting is being investigated, with the District Attorney's Office as the lead investigator.
