Man Cited for Using Rubbing Alcohol to Catch Fish

AVALON, Calif. (AP) - A scuba diver has been cited for using rubbing alcohol to catch fish off Catalina Island.

The 46-year-old man from Ventura County, whose name was not released, was cited earlier this month for two misdemeanor violations of state Fish and Game code.

The Los Angeles Times reports ( ) the man told wardens that he didn't know using rubbing alcohol to collect fish was illegal. The man said he was a licensed collector of aquarium fish.

Authorities said 172 blue-striped gobies were released into the ocean unharmed.
