LOS ANGELES (AP) - Prosecutors say they've charged a man in the 1977 rape and murder of a young mother who was found dead in her Long Beach home.
Deputy District Attorney Jodi Castano says police were led to arrest 53-year-old Martell Nathaniel Chubbs after reexamining bodily fluids the coroner collected during the victim's autopsy and running them through a DNA database.
Castrano says it was two days after Christmas when the body of 17-year-old Shelley H. was found with her 13-month-old child sitting beside her. The victim's last name was withheld.
Authorities say the victim died of asphyxia, but she also had superficial stab wounds.
Chubbs is being held without bail. He is due for arraignment Sept. 11.
