LOS ANGELES (AP) - Officials say part of Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa's office was evacuated after a letter was received with white powder inside.
The mayor's office said in a statement late Thursday that the letter came from a prison in Maryland and contained threats, but the powder was just chalk.
When an employee opened the envelope and found the powder he went to police stationed at City Hall, and a section of the mayor's office on the third floor was evacuated.
Police, firefighters and the FBI investigated the envelope, found the powder was harmless chalk and reopened the office.
The statement says the LAPD will investigate the threats in the letter. No details about them were released.
