LA Deputy Struck, Critically Injured by Car

LOS ANGELES (AP) - A sheriff's deputy was struck and critically injured by a car as he investigated an abandoned vehicle along railroad tracks in an unincorporated area of East Los Angeles.

Sheriff's officials say Deputy Rudy Juarez is being treated for head injuries and broken bones Saturday. He is unconscious but breathing on his own, according to a department statement.

The accident happened about 6:15 a.m. along the Gold Line tracks at Downey Road and Third Street near the 60 Freeway.

Officials say the driver of the car that struck the deputy remained on the scene. There have been no arrests.

The California Highway Patrol is handling the investigation.

Juarez is with the department's Transit Services Bureau.
