LOS ANGELES (AP) - Los Angeles County's top health official says free meningococcal vaccines will be offered to low-income and uninsured residents following a recent death in West Hollywood.

Dr. Jonathan Fielding said Wednesday the vaccines should alleviate public concern, but there's no outbreak of the rare and sometimes deadly illness in Los Angeles or among gay men.

West Hollywood officials called for county response following the death of 33-year-old Brett Shaad on Saturday. He's the second gay man to die of bacterial meningitis in the last 5½ weeks.

Vaccines will be offered at County-USC Medical Center, the Hubert H. Humphrey and H. Claude Hudson health centers and MLK Multi-Service Ambulatory Care Center.

Vaccines will be also offered at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Torrance and High Desert Multi-Service Ambulatory Care Center in Lancaster.
