LOS ANGELES (AP) - A transient from Colorado has been charged with murder and assault for allegedly driving his Dodge Avenger down Los Angeles' Venice Beach boardwalk, killing an Italian tourist and injuring 16 others.
If convicted, Nathan Louis Campbell faces up to life in prison.
Prosecutors Tuesday said Campbell maneuvered around a vehicle barrier early Saturday evening and plowed into tourists and vendors, killing 32-year-old Alice Gruppioni, who was on her honeymoon.
He is scheduled to be arraigned later Tuesday.
He is charged murder and 16 counts of assault with a deadly weapon and 17 counts of hit-and-run.
LOS ANGELES (AP) - The Los Angeles City Council wants new street barriers to block unwanted vehicles from getting onto the Venice Beach boardwalk.
A council motion approved unanimously Tuesday asks police and city officials to immediately erect temporary barriers at the most dangerous intersections along the boardwalk.
The council also asked for a two-week study that will assess where to install permanent posts or other barriers to keep cars away from pedestrians.
The vote comes three days after a rogue driver maneuvered around a vehicle barrier and plowed into tourists and vendors on the boardwalk, killing an Italian honeymooner and injuring 16 others.
A transient with a history of run-ins with police - Nathan Louis Campbell - is in custody for investigation of murder.
