MARTINEZ, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say the suspect in the shooting of a California Highway Patrol officer on a San Francisco Bay area freeway shot the officer without warning in the head.
Contra Costa County Sheriff's spokesman Jimmy Lee said Wednesday that footage from a dashboard camera showed Officer Kenyon Youngstrom and the suspect, 38-year-old Christopher Boone Lacy, had a brief conversation following a traffic stop before Lacy pulled his gun.
Youngstrom's partner had apparently initiated the Tuesday morning traffic stop on Interstate 680 near Alamo in a separate vehicle. Lee said the partner shot Lacy, who was later pronounced dead.
According to Lee, the suspect was being pulled over on suspicion of driving with an obstructed license plate.
The 37-year-old Youngstrom remains in critical condition.
