VENTURA, Calif. (AP) - Health officials are urging people to be vaccinated for swine flu after more than a dozen people were hospitalized with flu-like symptoms in Central California.

The Ventura County Star ( ) says 12 hospitalizations were reported in Kern County from last Friday through Sunday.

Kern County Public Health Officer Claudia Jonah says only one patient tested positive for the H1N1 virus but testing is still being done on the others.

In Ventura County, two county residents have been hospitalized with swine flu.

A swine flu pandemic in 2009 and 2010 killed at least 150,000 people worldwide.

Authorities say H1N1 most seriously affects young- to middle-aged people - unlike other types of flu that typically hit hardest among the elderly and children under 2.
