LA CRESCENTA, Calif. (AP) - Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies say a gunman who robbed one store in a La Crescenta shopping center and barricaded himself inside another for hours has died in an apparent suicide.
The La Crescenta sheriff's station says the standoff began at about 4 p.m. Friday at a Verizon Wireless store about 12 miles north of downtown LA. After negotiators couldn't draw him out more than five hours later, a tactical team entered the store and found the suspect dead.
Officials say the man apparently killed himself because no sheriff's shots were fired.
The Sheriff's Department said in a statement that the armed suspect had robbed a neighboring business, but didn't say which one.
Black Friday shoppers were evacuated from a Ralphs supermarket, a Rite Aid drugstore and other surrounding stores.
