SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Gov. Jerry Brown is calling on the University of California to contain costs and rethink how it does business even though voters approved new taxes to fund schools and colleges.

Brown spoke during his first appearance at a UC Board of Regents meeting on Wednesday, eight days after Proposition 30 passed on the Nov. 6 ballot.

On Tuesday, officials at UC and California State University heeded his request to postpone votes on raising student fees. The UC board had been scheduled to consider tuition increases for several professional degree programs.

At Wednesday's meeting, the governor urged the 10-campus system to embrace digital technology that will allow more students to take online courses for university credit.

Brown says Proposition 30 will provide much needed tax revenue, but the state and university must maintain fiscal discipline.
