GILROY, Calif. (AP) - A San Francisco Bay area fire chief has resigned after authorities say he provided alcohol to a decoy who was posing as minor as part of a sting operation.

The Santa Cruz Sentinel reports that Interim Gilroy Fire Chief Roger Bloom apologized to city officials on Monday before tendering his resignation.

Sheriff's officials say the decoy asked Bloom to buy him beer outside a Santa Cruz County liquor store on Friday night, and Bloom complied.

He was cited for furnishing alcohol to a minor.

The 52-year-old Bloom had been Gilroy's interim fire chief since Aug. 17. City officials say he made more than $174,000 a year.
