REDWOOD CITY, Calif. (AP) - Three members of a holiday-bound family stranded with a flat tire on a Northern California freeway have been struck and killed by a sport utility vehicle.

The California Highway Patrol says it is investigating 82-year-old G.A. Smith, who was driving at a high rate of speed when his Volkswagen SUV struck the family's disabled Lexus on the shoulder of Interstate 280.

The San Jose Mercury News says 48-year-old Manjit Kaur, her 28-year-old son Manpreet Singh and her 21-year-old daughter Jasdeep Kaur died in the Friday afternoon collision.

The Santa Clara family was headed for San Francisco International Airport for a flight to Texas to visit Dallas relatives for the holidays when they stopped with a flat tire.

Smith is hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries.
