OROVILLE, Calif. (AP) - Fire crews have begun mopping up and surveying the damage from a fire at a Northern California plant that supplies electricity to pump water as part of a major water delivery system in the state.

State fire Capt. Scott McLean says crews were able to get into the Ronald B. Robie Thermalito Pumping-Generating plant near Oroville on Friday morning after the fire that began a day earlier died down overnight. Poor visibility and other potential dangers had forced them out of the plant on Thursday.

McLean says so far the damage appears to be less extensive than he expected although the plant remains closed.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.

State officials say the fire will not affect water deliveries since water from nearby Lake Oroville - a major state reservoir - can be diverted around the damaged plant.
