SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - A Sacramento-based employment program is offering firms cash for every displaced worker they hire.
The Sacramento Bee reports the Hiring Assistance Program awards employers as much as $5,000 per newly-hired employee for up to six months.
The Sacramento Employment and Training Agency runs the program, working with the nonprofit North State Building Industry Foundation, which screens candidates and prepares the contracts.
Administrators say the program offers opportunities for those out of work or underemployed because of a prior layoff, and gives added incentive to local companies for making the hires they need.
Now in its fourth year, the program has awarded about $700,000 in grants. It has funding through June 2014.
