SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) - A jury has recommended the death penalty for a man who raped and stabbed to death a pregnant Orange County newlywed nearly a quarter-century ago. City News Service says the recommendation came Thursday for Jason Balcom, who was convicted in March of murder with special circumstances. Balcom, who's 42, will be sentenced in June.
Authorities say he attacked 22-year-old Malinda Gibbons in her Costa Mesa apartment in July 1988. She was bound, gagged, raped and sodomized. Her husband found her body when he returned from work. Balcom previously was sentenced for raping a woman in Santa Ana days after Gibbons was killed and for raping a woman a month later in Battle Creek, Mich. DNA testing linked him to Gibbons' death in 2004.
