EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (AP) - A dead whale found floating off a Southern California beach is likely the young gray freed from rope tangled around its tail earlier this month.
The Torrance Daily Breeze (bit.ly/RmjcpR) says lifeguards towed the 20-foot whale out to sea after it was discovered on Friday about 300 yards off Manhattan Beach.
Peter Wallerstein of El Segundo-based Marine Animal Rescue says they feared their Sept. 6 rescue effort would end in tragedy.
