VALLEY SPRINGS, Calif. (AP) - The father of a 12-year-old boy arrested in the stabbing death of his 8-year-old sister says he believes his son is innocent until he is shown evidence that proves otherwise.
Barney Fowler told The Associated Press on Monday that the family is standing behind the boy "until they have the proper evidence to show it's my son."
Sheriff's deputies in the Central California foothill community of Valley Springs arrested the 12-year-old on Saturday in the April 27 death of 8-year-old Leila Fowler.
The boy had told police he saw a man with long gray hair fleeing the family's home.
The FBI joined investigators from the Calaveras County Sheriff's Office and recently confiscated several knives from the home.
Community members were shocked that the boy was implicated but said they're relieved an arrest was made.
