VISTA, Calif. (AP) - Bail has been set at $2 million each for an Oceanside couple charged with turning a Mexican girl into a sex slave.
U-T San Diego says bail was set Monday for Inez Martinez Garcia and Marcial Garcia Hernandez. They didn't enter pleas at the hearing and remain jailed Tuesday.
Prosecutors charge that the couple got a 12-year-old Mexican relative to live with them in 2001 after promising she would receive education and a better life.
Instead, authorities claim the girl was forced to care for the couple's three children, beaten, raped and sold for sex.
She eventually was removed from the home and returned to Mexico. Now an adult, she came forward 2 ½ years ago with details of the alleged abuse.
