FULLERTON, Calif. (AP) - Orange County prosecutors say a man in prison for life without parole has been charged with killing his friend three decades ago.
A district attorney's statement says David Richard Campbell was charged Wednesday with first-degree murder in the death of Frank "Bart" Marshall, who disappeared in 1982. The charge comes with a special circumstance allegation of multiple murders, making him eligible for the death penalty.
Campbell was convicted in 1983 and 1991 of killing two other friends.
Two retired investigators reopening Fullerton's cold cases tracked down Marshall's friends. During a visit last year with Campbell, police Sgt. Jeff Stuart told City News Service Campbell admitted to killing Marshall.
Authorities said Campbell dismembered his victims and dumped remains around Southern California mountains.
