SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - A 40-year-old inmate has been killed at a Kern County prison and his cellmate is being held as the lone suspect.
Kern Valley State Prison Lt. Jeff Smith said Tuesday that Steven Brenneman was found dead in his cell Monday afternoon. He had fatal stab wounds and blunt force trauma to the head.
He was alone with his cellmate, 40-year-old Walter Tamayo, who is being kept in isolation while the death is investigated. No charges have been filed.
Brenneman was serving an 18-year sentence from Riverside County for rape with force and violence and penetration with a foreign object.
Tamayo is serving a life sentence from Los Angeles County for first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder.
The prison is about 78 miles south of Fresno and houses nearly 3,800 inmates.
