SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (AP) - Caltrain is overhauling its safety procedures and putting two engineers on leave after passengers legally crossing the tracks had to jump out of the way of a speeding commuter train.

The San Jose Mercury News reports no one was hurt in the Aug. 24 incident, but passengers getting off a train stopped at the South San Francisco station had to move quickly to avoid being hit by an oncoming express train.

Caltrain is still investigating what caused the incident, but Caltrain spokeswoman Jayme Ackemann says the engineer operating the train stopped at the station tested positive for marijuana.

Ackemann says the station lacks a gate or crossing arms to keep passengers from crossing active tracks. Usually engineers signal each other to ensure the station is clear, but apparently that did not happen last month.
