LOS ANGELES (AP) - California safety inspectors are investigating what caused a construction trench to collapse, killing one.

Cal-OSHA spokesman Peter Melton tells the Los Angeles Times work has been stopped at the Pacific Palisades site pending a probe.

Firefighters on Thursday rescued one worker from the trench, but another who was trapped more severely died. It took crews about nine hours to recover the man's body. The Los Angeles County coroner's office on Friday identified the man as 50-year-old Gilbert Vargas.

The men were working on a storm-water treatment project when the accident occurred.
