SAN DIEGO (AP) - A man has been sentenced to five months in jail for selling thousands of prescription painkillers slated to be destroyed at a San Diego waste company.

John Francis Bonavita was sentenced Monday in a San Diego courtroom. He had previously pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute prescription drugs.

Court documents show Bonavita worked with three others, including two employees at the waste company Enserv West, to intercept prescription drugs slated for destruction as they arrived at the company's warehouse.

The workers, who also have pleaded guilty to similar charges, separated the more valuable pills and gave them to Bonavita for resale. Bonavita paid the men for the pills.
