SAN DIEGO (AP) - An attorney representing a family bent out of shape over a public school yoga program in the beach city of Encinitas says he has filed a lawsuit to halt the district-wide classes.

Attorney Dean Broyles says he filed the lawsuit in San Diego Superior Court on Wednesday.

He says the program violates the separation between church and state because the practice being taught is inherently religious.

Broyles says his clients want the classes halted.

Encinitas Union School District officials could not be immediately reached for comment.

The lessons are funded by a $533,000, three-year grant from the Jois Foundation, a nonprofit group that promotes Ashtanga yoga.

School officials have said the classes are not religious but help reduce stress and build strength. They say the program is a national model.
