MERCED, Calif. (AP) - A judge has sentenced a California man accused of imprisoning and torturing his girlfriend over more than two months to a state mental institution.
Merced County prosecutors say 40-year-old Daniel Ruben Gonzales pleaded guilty to 25 counts, including forcible rape, false imprisonment and torture. But a judge found him not guilty by reason of insanity and sentenced him on Tuesday to up to 332 years and four months in state custody.
Investigators say Gonzales held and assaulted his live-in girlfriend inside a Merced apartment in 2009, burning and stabbing her. The Merced Sun-Star reports that an officer went there after a second alleged victim came forward.
According to authorities, the girlfriend appeared in back of Gonzales while he was talking to the officer and mouthed, 'Help me.' She was apparently bloody and bruised.
