LOS ANGELES (AP) - California's top prosecutor is suing clothing manufacturers based in India and China for allegedly using pirated software, giving them an unfair advantage over American companies.

In a suit filed Thursday in Los Angeles County Superior Court, California Attorney General Kamala Harris alleges Pratibha Syntex Ltd. of India and Ningbo Beyond Home Textile Co. Ltd. of China didn't pay licensing fees for software products from Adobe, Microsoft, Symantec and others.

The companies export men's, women's and children's clothing into California.

California's apparel manufacturers are largely based in Los Angeles County and employed more than 580,000 people last year.

Harris spokeswoman Lynda Gledhill says the defendants don't have representation in the U.S., to her knowledge.

Emails seeking comment from the companies' headquarters overseas were not immediately returned Thursday afternoon.
