RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) - A California Highway Patrol officer is recovering after he was stabbed by a man who reportedly tried to jump onto a freeway. Riverside police say the CHP received a 911 call shortly before 10 p.m. Thursday that a man was climbing a State Route 91 overpass fence. Police say an arriving CHP officer grabbed his legs to keep him from jumping but the man pulled a knife and stabbed him in the back, arms, face and eye.
The CHP officer held on. The man finally was subdued with help from a second CHP officer, an off-duty Riverside police officer and off-duty San Bernardino County sheriff's sergeant. He could face a charge of attempted murder of a peace officer. The injured officer will receive specialized treatment for the eye injury.
