CHP Officer Found Dead from Gunshot in Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (AP) - Authorities are investigating the death of a California Highway Patrol officer who died from a gunshot wound to the head in Bakersfield.

The Bakersfield Californian (http://bit.ly/SACOnH) reports that 43-year-old Denny Drummond was off-duty and found lying on a road when sheriff's deputies found him late Thursday night.

Kern County Sheriff's spokesman Ray Pruitt says Drummond was taken to Kern Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 5:20 a.m. Friday.

Pruit says Drummond had been at a nearby bar before the shooting. Investigators found a handgun in Drummond's vehicle.

Sheriff's investigators are trying to determine whether the shooting was a homicide or suicide. No suspects have been identified.

Drummond was a military veteran who had been a CHP officer for 14 years. He was married with two sons.
