SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - The California Highway Patrol says the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge needs a $31 million security camera system, a much higher price tag than previously estimated.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports that the Bay Area Toll Authority on Wednesday said it had allotted only $8 million for cameras on the new eastern span of the bridge, which is scheduled to open Labor Day weekend.

Members of the board did not vote on whether to recommend the more expensive system - which would be funded by toll payers - but agreed to meet privately with CHP officials to better understand the bridge's vulnerabilities.

The CHP says $26.3 million is needed for the east span; $5 million to upgrade the west span's cameras.
