OJAI, Calif. (AP) - A woman played dead and escaped with minor injuries when a bear attacked her as she walked her dogs in Ventura County.
State Fish and Game spokesman Andrew Hughan tells the Los Angeles Times the confrontation north of Ojai Friday let the woman with scratches and a minor wrist injury.
The dogs ran off and the woman rolled down a hill and play dead until the bear lost interest. Hughan says after sniffing and circling her, the bear ran away.
Hughan said the California black bear was female and accompanied by a cub. Officials did not have any immediate details about the bear's weight or size.
The Times reports there have been 16 confirmed bear attacks in California since 1980. The most recent was in 2003 in Mono County.
