SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Officials are spending an additional $12.7 million on the demolition of the old San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge.

Bridge officials announced the figure on Monday. The goal is to get the project, which is currently several months behind schedule, back on schedule.

Crews will now remove the east and west ends of the old cantilever section simultaneously. The original plan was to take down the west end first and then move on to the east side.

Bridge spokesman Andrew Gordon said the change should also prevent other potential delays, paying for itself over time.

The cantilever section was replaced by a new, $6.4 billion self-anchoring suspension span that opened to commuters last year. Officials have set aside $300 million for the demolition and say the additional $12.7 million would not put them over that budget.
