OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Bay Area residents may have a chance to walk on the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge if a proposed grand opening celebration is approved.

The Contra Costa Times reports the Bay Area Toll Authority is considering a proposal that would open the bridge to foot traffic as part of a Labor Day celebration of the new eastern span.

The authority will consider the proposal during a public meeting next week. If approved the bridge would be open to more than 125,000 people on foot on the fourth and final day of the scheduled full bridge closure.

Caltrans must shut down the existing span to vehicle traffic so that work crews can connect the new span to the highway connector ramps at the Oakland end and at Yerba Buena Island before the bridge opens on Sept. 3.
