LOS ANGELES (AP) - Attorneys in the Anna Nicole Smith drug conspiracy trial in Los Angeles are scheduled to begin giving their opening statements.
Prosecutors are expected Wednesday morning to accuse two doctors and Smith's lawyer-boyfriend of giving her massive amounts of opiates and sedatives in the last troubled years of her life.
All three have pleaded not guilty. Their lawyers, who also will speak Wednesday, suggest they cared deeply about Smith and were desperately trying to save the doomed model during a period when she gave birth to a daughter and lost her grown son to a drug overdose.
Superior Court Judge Robert Perry said Smith's cause of death is not an issue, although some jury members said they already know she died of a drug overdose. They promised to disregard that information.
