Crews Set To Begin Work Today Of Project To Bypass Devil's Slide

Caltrans began digging two tunnels today that will allow drivers to avoid the windy stretch of coastal road known as Devil's Slide.

A public ceremony was held this morning north of Montara on Highway One to mark the start of the project.

Crews plan to use explosives, a 120-ton drill, dump trucks and other heavy equipment as they bore two twin tunnels 30 feet wide and 4,200 feet long -- under San Pedro Mountain.

The project is estimated to cost 332 million dollars.

Devils Slide has been closed over the years because of falling rocks, landslides and other dangers.

The new highway through the twin tunnels is expected to open in 2010.
