Fire In San Bernardino National Forest Prompts Camp Evacuations

A wind-driven wildfire has burned at least 200 acres in the San Bernardino National Forest, forming a cloud of heavy smoke and forcing the evacuation of several campgrounds.

A U.S. Forest Service spokeswoman says the fire was reported around 1:30 p.m. and is burning north away from mountaintop communities around Big Bear Lake.

It is 16 percent contained.

The blaze is being fanned by 27 mile-per-hour winds.

The Camp Whittle, Hannah Flats, Big Pine Flats and Ironwood Group campgrounds have been evacuated as a precaution.

About 225 firefighters aided by eight fixed wing aircraft and two water dropping helicopters are battling the balze.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
