Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Tuesday scheduled a special election on Dec. 11 to fill a state Assembly seat left vacant by the election of Democrat Laura Richardson to Congress.
If no candidate gets a majority vote, a runoff will be held in the 55th Assembly District between the top vote-getters in each party as part of the Feb. 5 presidential primary.
Richardson, D-Long Beach, was elected in August to succeed the late Rep. Juanita Millender-McDonald, a seven-term congresswoman who died of cancer in April.
Richardson, a former Millender-McDonald aide, was elected last year to represent the 55th District, which includes Carson, most of Lakewood, parts of Los Angeles and Long Beach, and unincorporated West Carson.
Nearly 53 percent of the district's voters are Democrats.
