Grandpa Tried To Take Fall For Grandson's Fatal Crash

Authorities say a grandfather concerned about his grandson's future allegedly tried to take the blame for July 2004 alcohol-related car crash in Irvine that killed two people.

Sixty-three-year-old Michael Edward Lumary of Diamond Bar allegedly told authorities he was behind the wheel in a botched attempt to cover up for his grandson, who had been driving on a suspended license from an earlier alcohol-related crash.

Lumary now faces three years in prison if convicted of obstruction of justice and accessory after the fact.

He's on trial in Santa Ana alongside his 22-year-old grandson, Brandon Friend, charged with two counts of vehicular manslaughter and felony
hit-and-run.

Lumary's attorney describes his client as "a nice man who made a bonehead mistake."
