The Zaca Fire is seven weeks old and continues to show bursts of life, despite firefighters' significant progress this week.
The massive blaze in Santa Barbara County nudged its way into Ventura County this week. It was 83 percent contained Friday night
after burning about 369 square miles of steep backcountry.
Fire officials recommended evacuations for residents of an area from Ozena north to the Ventura/Santa Barbara County line west of Highway 33.
Air tankers and helicopters were able to slow the fire's movement east, and firefighters gained ground in controlling its northwest corner.
